Burke, Williams & Sorensen, LLP is seeking a Paralegal to support our Public Law and Litigation Practice Groups. The successful candidate will have at least three years of experience in California Public Records Act (CPRA) compliance and litigation document review, managing records requests from intake through production and assisting attorneys in reviewing and producing documents in response to requests for production and subpoenas.

This position is a full-time, non-exempt, 7.5-hour/day position.  Our current arrangement for staff is to work 2 days on-site and 3 days from home weekly upon satisfactory completion of their introductory period. This arrangement may be changed at any time based on business needs and decisions.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Public Records Act:

  • Administer and track CPRA requests from intake through production, ensuring compliance with statutory deadlines.
  • Coordinate with agency staff to identify and collect responsive records.
  • Review, redact, and produce responsive documents, flagging exemption issues—including privilege, deliberative process, personnel, law enforcement, and privacy—for attorney review.
  • Draft CPRA correspondence under attorney supervision, including acknowledgment letters, extension notices, and response letters.

Litigation Document Review:

  • Conduct first- and second-level document review for responsiveness, relevance, and privilege in response to requests for production and subpoenas.
  • Apply coding, categorization, and tagging protocols in Quickdata, Logickull, Relativity, or similar platforms.
  • Identify and flag privileged or sensitive documents, including those subject to attorney-client privilege, work product protection, and statutory confidentiality.
  • Prepare privilege logs and redaction logs; organize and manage productions, including Bates-stamping and delivery in compliance with court rules and discovery obligations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Meets requirements under California Business & Professions Code § 6450.
  • Bachelor’s degree and ABA-approved Paralegal Certificate required.
  • At least three years of experience with CPRA administration, civil litigation document review, or both, in a law firm, public agency, or government law office.
  • Experience reviewing and producing documents in response to RFPs and subpoenas, with familiarity with privilege and responsiveness determinations.
  • Familiarity with CPRA exemptions and litigation privilege doctrines sufficient to flag issues for attorney review.
  • Proficiency with document review platforms such as Quickdata, Logickull, and Relativity.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills and sound judgment in handling sensitive materials.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience with a city attorney’s office, county counsel’s office, special district legal team, or law firm representing public agencies.
  • Experience preparing privilege and redaction logs in connection with civil litigation productions.

COMPENSATION:

The pay range for this role is the hourly equivalent of $85,000.00-$115,000.00 annually. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skillset, and successful track record. Annual discretionary bonuses, competitive health insurance benefits, and 401(k) with a partial match are offered when individuals are eligible for benefits.
