Lynn L. Carpenter is a trial attorney and member of the Litigation Practice Group in our Los Angeles office. Her focus is on federal civil rights and law enforcement defense.
Lynn began her legal career as a prosecutor, where she prosecuted domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault crimes under a federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant. She was honored to assist victims of violent crime in their pursuit of justice.
Since 2017, Lynn has specialized in public entity defense and police litigation, most often defending civil rights claims in federal court. She has successfully defended multiple cases involving allegations of excessive force under the Fourth Amendment, wrongful death, violation of Equal Protection and substantive due process, First Amendment freedom of speech and retaliation, and constitutional issues of jail confinement, many of which involved seven and eight figure demands.
Lynn has obtained three unanimous defense verdicts as first or second chair trial counsel. In 2024, she obtained a defense verdict for the County of Riverside in a federal civil rights/wrongful death shooting case where the pre-deliberation demand was $115,000,000.
Lynn enjoys collaborating and developing winning strategies to solve client problems in a way that is in lockstep with client goals, whether through early resolution, focused litigation, or jury trial. She utilizes a people first approach, recognizing that the litigation process can be intimidating and stressful for those involved.
Lynn enjoys traveling with her husband – especially to Italy and Colorado, regenerative gardening, and caring for her small brood of rescue animals.
