Maria Akopyan

As a dynamic member of Burke’s Litigation Practice Group, Maria Akopyan brings a wealth of experience and a diverse legal background to her role. Her practice involves representing business and public entities, such as cities, transportation carriers, and insurance companies in complex contractual and tort claims where she skillfully navigates the nuances of legal challenges with strategic acumen and a strong sense of justice. Maria’s career path, marked by significant achievements and continuous learning, reflects her unwavering commitment to excellence, ethical practice, and client advocacy.

Born and raised in the sunny capital of Armenia, Yerevan, Maria embarked on her legal journey with honors, earning her Bachelor of Laws degree from Slavonic University in the top 10% of her class. Her academic pursuits then led her to Moscow, Russia where she graduated cum laude with a Master’s degree from the Diplomatic Academy furthering her studies in international relations and international law. Lastly, she excelled academically graduating cum laude with a Master’s degree in Law from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles.

Maria’s academic pursuits are complemented by an equally diverse professional background. She began her legal career at Ernst & Young in Moscow, contributing significantly to the legal advisory services. Her tenure at one of the Big Four firms equipped her with a deep understanding of corporate law and the intricacies of international legal practices. Maria’s move to the U.S. marked a significant step in her career, broadening her legal perspective and enhancing her practical expertise. Prior to joining Burke, she has been a part of established law firms in Los Angeles handling high-value litigation and intricate investigations. Her practice there encompassed construction defect, business/commercial law, including breach of contract, fraud and unfair competition, labor and employment disputes, civil rights, tort actions and more.

In her current role at Burke, Maria is not only a legal practitioner but also a proactive problem-solver and strategic thinker. Her approach to litigation is comprehensive, involving active participation in all stages of a case from initial case assessment through resolution. This includes meticulous planning for written discovery, conducting and defending depositions, motion practice, engaging in mediations and arbitrations, and preparing for trial.

Maria is multilingual, with fluency in Russian and Armenian, and basic proficiency in Spanish. She is a certified Notary Public in the State of California.
